Containing chickens is a full time job. I can’t count how many attempts at fencing I’ve tried over the years. There were times I actually gave up on keeping them penned in and allowed nature to take it’s course – which from a chicken’s point of view was just a version of sudden death.
The main reason for keeping chickens contained is to protect them from predators. If they’re laying hens, there is the added practicality of finding their eggs. (It has been known for hens to lay eggs in secret places that later turn out to be mowing lanes – very unfortunate for everyone involved.)
We also don’t want these eating and digging experts roaming around in the kale. They are very thorough when it comes to defoliation.
So I spent the entire weekend and an ungodly amount of money to keep these birds happy.
